It’s baaack! The 3rd Annual Quiltathon is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Fenway Park!

In honor of Fenway’s 100th Anniversary, the goal has been set to make 100 quilt tops before the day’s end!

Our last quiltathon produced over 50 quilt tops that were donated to the families of our US militarymen and women. We also raised over $2,500 for Wrapped Up in Sports, which has gone towards quilt materials and supplies, shipping of quilts and expanding our cause throughout New England!

Pre-made quilt kits w/ instructions, donated fabrics and other supplies will be provided, but we entice quilters to bring their own sewing machines and supplies as well.

Completed quilts will be donated to

  • Room to Grow
  • Hospitality Homes
  • Children’s Hospital Boston
  • Horizons for Homeless Children.

Complimentary food and refreshments will be provided
Raffles & Gifts will be awarded
AND expect a visit from Red Sox favorite Wally who is looking forward to coming back to sew!
A full day is not required. Volunteers are encouraged to attend throughout the day. The longer you stay, the more quilts will be made for children in need.

Come participate for a worthy cause – making children smile!

A Message from WUIS Volunteer Eli Orkin

19 Dec

Eli Orkin, WUIS Volunteer:

As a former child leukemia patient who has been in remission for over twenty years, I am extremely aware of how various non-medical elements aided in my recovery. I was very lucky to have many close friends and family who loved and cared about me.

No matter how down I was or how melancholy my mood, I always looked forward to visits or cards from friends and classmates. I still have a book of cards that my classmates made, wishing me well. Another occasion I remember vividly was a day I was feeling particularly dejected, due to my medication and overall situation. A classmate brought me an adorable stuffed dog. I named him Hospibet because he made me feel better in the hospital.

Situations like mine validate how the quilts created by Wrapped-Up in sports are able to bring a smile to the face of any child whose condition is less than ideal. They not only deliver comfort, warmth, and a smile but they are wonderful mementos of the fact that there are people who care about their predicaments.
