DONATION: Local Heroes & Stars and Stitches Project

16 Nov

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, Wrapped Up in Sports attended the weekly care package drive organized by Local Heroes, a 501(c)3 that collects donations to send to our troops overseas. They have met every Wednesday for the past 6 years and have sent 14,150 care packages to date.

As part of our Stars & Stitches project, 39 quilts and star blocks were selected by family members. They loved each and every quilt that was available and can’t wait to send the star blocks to their relatives overseas.

Many thanks to our volunteer quilters and Squanicook Colonial Quilt Guild for the quilts they have donated to this very special project!

UPDATE: A Thank You from The Marchioni Family

28 Oct

Email sent from “Stars & Stitches” quilt recipient Niki Marchioni whose husband is currently serving in the US Military:

I just wanted to say thank you so much for my Red Sox blanket for my daughter. I received it this past week and it is adorable and perfect! I adore the little star that I send to my husband as well. I know that he will love the idea of carrying a piece of it on his missions. Thank you so much for this organization and everything you guys do.

Much Love,
The Marchioni Family

Our pleasure!
Thank you to your husband for his service to our country and to your family.  We appreciate all that you sacrifice and hope this quilt brings you comfort.

PROFILE: Home Base Program

16 May

Home Base Program

Who are they?
The Home Base Program is a partnership between the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital.

What do they do?
They are dedicated to improving the lives of veterans deployed in support of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and live with deployment-or combat-related stress and/or traumatic brain injury.

What do they provide?
They provide clinical care to veterans as well as support for their families. The Home Base Program also offers educational courses and materials for health care providers and the public.

They’re also bringing together world-class researchers seeking medical breakthroughs in the ptrevention, diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury and stress-related disorders.

Supporting the families of Veterans

When one member of a family serves his or her country in the military, everyone in that family serves. Deployment and reintegration impact an entire family, including children, spouses, parents and siblings of service members. Too often these effects on military families go unrecognized. We need a better understanding of how to help family members cope when a loved one is deployed and when that family member returns home. Such transitions can have a significant effect on children of different ages. All families deserve support to remain strong, loving, and connected throughout the deployment and re-integration of a service member.

If you or a family member is in crisis or facing an emergency:
• contact your health care provider
• go to the nearest emergency room, or
• call the V.A. Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1 (800) 273-TALK (8255)
